Obituary of Tina Louise Markel
Following a lengthy battle with brain cancer, Tina Louise (Olson) Markel born February 28, 1982 of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully in her Strathmore, Alberta home on September 12, 2020 at the young age of 38 years. Tina was the beloved daughter to Ken (Joann) and Jackie (Bill) and wife to Jesse. Tina was the proudest mother of all five of her children, Tyler (Sam), Brady (Hayley), Eric, Hope, and Josie and is survived by her siblings Tanya (Brad), Shaun (Seanna), and Deanna and her step siblings Shawn, and Michelle (Tom). Tina is also survived by her best friends and soulmate Tasha (Justin), Jessica, Jodi, Geanette, and Ryan (Josephine). Tina’s passing is also deeply mourned by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and several remarkable friends. Despite the enormous size of the family, Tina developed a strong bond with each and every member. Even in her final days, her genuine spirit and whimsical sense of humor was a gift to those surrounding her.
Tina had a way of making every person who had the privilege of meeting her feel included and welcomed. Most of her children's friends lovingly referred to her as “Mama T”. It was not uncommon for the kids who came to visit to spend a majority of their time upstairs joking with Tina. Tina's door was always open and she provided a warm and welcoming environment to all. This loving atmosphere she created resulted in her home becoming a place for strangers to become friends and friends to become family.
Tina followed her passion of advocacy and attended the Social Work program at Mount Royal University. Following her diagnosis and during her treatment, Tina persevered and received her diploma in the Spring of 2018. She touched the lives of many during her employment at Wheatland Crisis Society. This passion could also be observed in her personal life when advocating those disadvantaged in her life. The impact Tina has made on those around will be carried on for many generations.
We would like to thank Dr. E. Muller, Nicole Porquet-Seitz, and the Palliative Care Team from Strathmore Home Care for their amazing care and support. Also, thank you to the amazing community for their prayers, thoughts, well wishes and support throughout Tina’s journey, we could not have done this without all of you. Tina may be gone, but never forgotten!
