Obituary of Brunhilde Viktoria Hoerger

December 23, 1928 - June 10, 2021

‘Bruni’ (Oma) Hoerger passed away peacefully at Strathmore Hospital with her husband Otto,
by her side.  Her strength and determination to live stayed with her through her final days.  Saddened
by her passing, yet grateful for the long, loving life she shared with her family, in particular for a devoted  marriage of 66 years.

Bruni was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, (part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg), to a Merchant Marine sailor who travelled the oceans of the world pre World War 1, and a mother who had worked and explored Europe as a young woman in the early 1920’s. It is not too surprising then, she met and fell in love with a young adventurer, Otto, who after a few years of courtship convinced her to migrate to Canada. She journeyed on the boat alone, arriving in Canada through Halifax Port, in 1955 to join Otto who had immigrated the previous year.  They spent their Canadian years in Edmonton, only recently moving to Strathmore to be closer to family.

In Germany, Brunhilde took great pride in her work as a milliner and textile shop manager. After arriving in Canada, she and Otto married July 1, 1955. The following year they brought their precious son, Werner into the world and she turned her time and attention to parenting and ensuring their culture and heritage continued on in their home and family life. She transferred her talents to being an excellent cook, spending days preparing traditional German dishes, complete with Cakes (Kuchen) and Pastries.
Bruni thoroughly enjoyed her friends, social outings at the German/Canadian Club, home entertainment, and made a special outing each year to attend Edmonton’s Klondike and Heritage Days.
In her later adult life, Bruni was thrilled becoming an Oma to her two grandsons, Torvald and Eric-Karlan, ensuring she showered them with all the latest toys, and over feeding them with her scrumptious meals and sweets.

Bruni, will be fondly remembered and held in the hearts of her family, husband Otto, grandsons Tory and Eric, and daughter in law Cindy, as well as the friends who they spent so many wonderful visits with. Rest in Peace Oma.

In honour of Bruni’s life, an intimate family service is being held at Wheatland Funeral Home, June 12, 2021.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Strathmore Hospital, palliative care unit, in her memory.

Otto and family are so grateful and express a heartfelt Thank You to all the staff involved, Paramedics, Strathmore Hospital, Dr. Douglas, and Dr. Joseph, nurses, and support staff, for the exceptional care and compassion shown Brunhilde and family during her end of life care. And to Wheatland Funeral Home, and Pastor Dawn for their unending dedication of care, compassion and support.
