It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend, Irene Etta Dougan (nee Shrumm) at the age of 84. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday July 13, 2022 at the Strathmore Hospital.

She was predeceased by her father (Claude), mother (Olive) Sisters; Audrey Ostrom, Norma Palsky and Anola Appelhof. She is survived by Bryce Dougan and her sisters Marilyn (Ken), Carol, Daughter - Renee Dougan (Frank Walsh) Sons Alan Dougan & Wesley Dougan (Marni) and her grandchildren, Chris Van Kleef (Shauna), Becky Van Kleef, Kaitlyn (Keegan) and Jared (Danielle), Matt, Gray and Zane, great granddaughter Ella plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was born in Lethbridge on September 22, 1937, the third daughter to parents Claude and Olive Shrumm. Irene grew up outside Coaldale Alberta, the with her Mom & Dad and 5 sisters. After her schooling in Coaldale, Irene went on to get her teaching certificate from the University of Calgary. Irene moved to Strathmore in September of 1963 where she got married and raised three children. Farm life has been a constant and enjoyable part of her life and she was proud of her role with her family and in her new community. Irene’s community involvement included teaching at various schools in Strathmore as well as offering music lessons to many people in the community.

The United church was an important part of Irene’s life both in Coaldale and Strathmore where she participated in the choir as well as playing the piano & organ for church services. Irene also joined the Order of the Eastern Star and the Red Hatters Group.

The family would like to thank the community for their kind words and support at this time. We would also like to extend our deepest appreciation to the staff at AgeCare Sagewood as well as the Nurses, Doctors and staff at the Strathmore Hospital.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Strathmore United Church (410-4th Street, Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m.
