Obituary of John Gardiner Jackson

With sadness we announce the passing of John Gardiner Jackson of Strathmore, Alberta on February 19, 2023.

John was born and raised, a farm boy, near Clairmont, Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta , where he received a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Geology.

He married Dorien Provost in 1958. They raised two children Graham and JoAnn, while he worked as a geologist and Dorien a registered nurse. They began in Edmonton, the Calgary. John was employed by various major and junior oil companies. In 1974, he struck out with his own company, Comet Oil and Gas Ltd. John worked until his retirement, at the age of 80.

In 1972, John and Dorien purchased a small farm east of Strathmore, where they built a home and raised a modest cow herd. They remained there until moving to Strathmore’s Wheatland Lodge in 2018. John spent his last year at Sagewood in Strathmore.

John leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Dorien; son Graham (Suzanne) Jackson of Wheatland County, Ab, and daughter JoAnn (Steve) Vachon of Fort Saskatchewan, Ab. Grandsons Lachlan (Rachel) Jackson and Brendan Jackson (Christine Sullivan). His granddaughter Keely Vachon and great grandchildren, Troy, and Carly Jackson. Brother Willie (Hazel) Jackson of Grand Prairie, Ab and sister Edith Midbo of Daysland, Ab.

John was predeceased by his sister Joyce in 1952, brother in law Harold Midbo in 2005 and granddaughter Janel Vachon in 1997.

A funeral service for John will be held on February 24, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Strathmore Alliance Church with burial to follow at Strathmore Cemetery.
