Lindsay Johnston

Obituary of Lindsay Gordon Johnston

JOHNSTON, Lindsay Gordon
December 11, 1958 – May 25, 2023

It is with great sadness that the Johnston family announces the passing of Lindsay Gordon Johnston on Thursday May 25, 2023. Lindsay passed away peacefully at home in his sleep after a long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) at age 64.

Lindsay was born in Montreal and moved to Calgary with his family in 1973.

Lindsay had a big passion for music and loved to play the trumpet and organ. In 1977 he was part of the Calgary Stampede Show Band where he played the trumpet. He was also in a band with his late brother Rick. When his children were young, he liked to sit at home and play the organ. He also taught his daughter Jennifer to play.

In the early 90’s Lindsay started a DJ company called Midnight Dawn where he played numerous weddings and jellybean dances. In the late 90’s he purchased Garry Robertson Music which, at the time, was one of the biggest DJ companies in southern Alberta.

Sports was another big passion of Lindsay’s. He loved to play hockey and played as a goalie for his entire hockey career, into his late 40’s. For many years he was also very active coaching his son Christopher when he was playing hockey, which he always looked forward to. He also enjoyed bowling and did this with his entire family. Every week he would help his brother Rick to bowl.

Lindsay’s biggest attribute was his generous heart as he would always be there to help anyone and put others before himself. Whether it was helping someone build a deck or fence or painting their house, to taking care of anyone in his family, he was always there and he will be greatly and dearly missed.

Lindsay is predeceased by his father Frederick, his mother Doris and brother Rick.

Lindsay is survived by his wife Linda Johnston; brother Glen Johnston (Joanne) of Edmonton; sister Lee Johnston (Mark) of Linden; son Christopher Johnston (Tannis and her children Chase & Lily); daughter Jennifer Smith (Greg); step-daughter Christine Andrew; grandson Zackary Johnston; granddaughter Elora Smith; nephews Gary Johnston (Raeanne) of Peterborough, Ont. and Kurt Johnston (Madisson); nieces Jaime Brown, Nicole Johnston and Taylor Baker-Johnston; great nephews Sirani Brown and Kemar Brown; great nieces Latavia Brown, Lillianna Curie-Johnston and Emily Curie-Johnston. Lindsay will also be greatly missed by longtime family friend Gigi Nicholson of Regina, SK and childhood friend John Walker of Montreal, QC.

A Celebration of Life will be held this summer for Lindsay and his brother Rick. Details will be posted on Christopher’s Facebook page as well as Wheatland Funeral Home’s Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you please donate, in Lindsay’s honor, to the ALS Society of Alberta. Please contact them directly.
