Obituary of Sheila Dorothy SMAIL
SMAIL, Sheila Dorothy (nee Cunning)
October 28, 1932 – Regina Saskatchewan
September 20, 2014 – Strathmore, Alberta
Sheila Smail passed away on September 20, 2014 in the Agape Manor Hospice in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 81, after a short but brave battle with ovarian cancer. Sheila is survived by her children Tim (Barbara) Smail and Carolyn Angus, her grandchildren Julia Smail, David Angus, William Smail, Matthew Angus and Olivia Smail, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom rallied around her during her final days. She also leaves behind many beloved friends, most of them lifelong. Sheila was preceded in death by her husband Owen Smail, her parents Dorothy and Cecil Cunning, and her brother Clive Cunning. Sheila was born and raised in Regina, graduating from Scott Collegiate and earning a teacher’s certificate from Normal School. In 1954, Sheila married Owen Smail. Together, they built a loving home in which to raise their children. Sheila loved spending time at Regina Beach – the cottage, the beach, the lake, swimming, boating, Butler’s fish and chips, and most of all, having her extended family coming to stay with her there. Seeing her children and grandchildren carry on her love of water and beaches was a source of great pride! Sheila was also a whiz on the sewing machine and with the knitting needles, finding many ways to express her abundant creativity. Everyone in the family was blessed with items that she made especially for them, which they will remember her by. Sheila was known for her love of language and conversation, the enjoyment and challenge of crossword puzzles, and a well-earned reputation as a formidable Scrabble player. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Lord of All Lutheran Church, Strathmore at 10:00 am with Pastor Dawn Nelson officiating. Coffee to follow at Lord of All Lutheran Church. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Regina at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Sue Breisch officiating. A lunch will follow at Lakeview United Church (3200 McCallum Ave., Regina) at 11:00 a.m. . In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to Ovarian Cancer Canada (Michelle Pilon, Western Regional Director, 1409 Edmonton Trail NE, Suite 105B, Calgary, AB. T2E 3K8).
