Obituary of Darlene Marie Humphreys

Darlene Marie Humphreys passed away on October 12, 2023 at the age of 83 years. Darlene was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 15, 1940. She was the daughter of Anthony (Tony) and Matilda Velker of Rockyford, Alberta.

Darlene earned B.A., B.Ed., and M.ed. degrees from the University of Calgary and her passion was teaching. It was a profession that she pursued in Calgary and later in Saudi Arabia when she accompanied her husband on an over-seas assignment. Darlene loved living overseas, immersing herself in foreign cultures and connecting with people from all over the world. She briefly taught in an underground school for women and would bring her toddlers along to class. She was elected president of the Dhahran Woman’s Group, travelled around the world five times, and visited China, India, Thailand and many more. Upon return to Calgary, Darlene built a successful small business as a sales rep before returning to her first love, teaching. Despite her lengthy absence, she found great fulfillment in the classroom and treasured each one of her students. She continued to practice until she was 75 and left only when her health required it. Following a diagnosis of cancer, Darlene and her husband moved to Strathmore, Alberta.

Darlene is survived by her husband, Bryce and her daughter, Leah Peters in her immediate family. Her older daughter Amy pre-deceased her in 2019. Darlene’s family also includes her sisters Gene, Millie and Lucille. She is also survived by four grand children Ethan, Claire Rowan and Ben.

There will be a Funeral Mass on November 7th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bonaventure Church (1600 Acadia Dr. SE, Calgary AB, T2J 3B3).
