Obituary of Ralph Douglas MACKENZIE

MACKENZIE, Ralph Douglas It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph Douglas Mackenzie at the age of 98 years, on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the Strathmore Hospital. Ralph is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Penny; son in law, Hal (Susan) Lust; grandchildren, Marc Mackenzie, Derek (Leigh Anne) Mackenzie, Mace (Paige) Mackenzie, Amber (Brad) Rhodes, Deanna (Clarence) Kooistra, and Bonnie Gilmore; 11 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Ruth Hellevang; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Helen, in 2005 and his daughter, Alma Mae, in 1979. Ralph was born on May 18, 1915 in Calgary, Alberta where he spent his youth. He met Helen while working near Milo and they moved to the Carseland community in 1941 where he worked for the Cool family before farming on his own. In addition to farming, Ralph drove a school bus, operated a grader, trouble-shooted for the telephone company, and worked for the County at the Carseland Water Treatment facility. He always enjoyed tinkering with motors, appliances, and building things, including his house. His easy going nature was well known and he could always be counted on to drop anything and lend a hand to any neighbours in need. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Fix It” around the community. Ralph was blessed with good health for the majority of his life, which he lived to the fullest. He was a long time member of the Carseland Lion’s Club, the curling club, the Ag. Society, and the Jet Setters. A special thanks to the nursing staff and the doctors at the Strathmore Hospital Extended Care for their care of Ralph. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Carseland Community Hall at 1:00 pm. Pastor Andy Wiebe officiating. If desired, memorial donations may be made directly to the Strathmore Handi Bus Association (680 Westchester Rd., Strathmore, T1P 1J1). To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
