Obituary of Shirley Nadine HYMAS

HYMAS, Nadine (Deen) September 27, 1932-February 6, 2013 Nadine Hymas of Strathmore, formerly of Rosebud, passed away peacefully on February 6 at the Strathmore Hospital. Deen was born in Saskatoon and grew up in Toronto, moving to Calgary in 1951 to seek adventure. She and Bob met at the Penley Dance Hall and it was love at first sight. Bob married her and moved her to the farm in Rosebud in 1955 where she quickly took to the country way of life. Deen was very active in Girl Guides serving as the Captain of the Rosebud troop and later becoming the Commissioner for her region. Once her daughters were done with Girl Guides she took on the job of Secretary of the Alberta Shorthorn Association. She and Bob met many wonderful friends from across Canada and around the world through this position. Deen’s next endeavour was as President of the Western Heritage Center and was responsible for the Center’s opening in Cochrane in 1996. Deen was very involved in volunteer activities throughout her life. Near and dear to her heart was the Calgary Stampede where she focused primarily on Youth Activities. When she moved to Strathmore, she joined the Strathmore United Church where she was very active in various activities and chaired the bi-annual thrift sale for many years. She thoroughly enjoyed working with all her friends in the church finding her work to be very fulfilling. Among her many talents was that of a skilled seamstress. She made beautiful christening gowns for all her grandchildren which will be treasured heirlooms for many years to come. She was an avid quilter making some gorgeous quilts for friends and family. Deen is survived by her husband Bob of Strathmore, daughter Penny Blackwell (Bob) of Massachusetts, son Rod (Jackie) of Rosebud, daughter Carolyn Templeton (Byron) and her five beloved grandchildren; Roberta, Jocelyn, and Roselyn Templeton, Kirbi Hymas, and John Blackwell. She was predeceased by her parents John and Berta McRae of Toronto. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Strathmore United Church at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Strathmore Hospital (200 Brent Blvd., Strathmore, T1P 1J9).
