Obituary of Margaret Mowatt SORENSEN

SORENSEN, Margaret Mowatt (Cormack) Margaret passed away very peacefully, and unexpectedly, at the Strathmore Extended Care Unit on Thursday afternoon, September 13, 2012. (This was her mother’s, brother’s, and nephew’s birthdays.) She was predeceased by her husband Carl (October 27, 1987), parents Jane and Jim Cormack, sisters Marion, Ida,Catherine McCool and husband Pat, Jean Bremner and husband Charles; brothers William, James (Jim) Cormack his wife Faye and son James, mother and father-in-law Marie and Soren Sorensen, brother-in-law Bill Sorensen and his wife Dee, sister-in-law Elsie Bower and children Michael and Barbara, and brother-in-law James Miller. Margaret leaves to mourn her passing daughter Carleen; grandchildren Loni, Warren (Rhonda), Derek and Leanne Keall; great grandchildren Sean, Tanner, Britnie, Meghan, Ty and Lauren; great-great grandson Seth, sister Gladys Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was born and raised on a farm six miles east of Strathmore. She attended Aitkenstead School where she was the infamous back-catcher of the local girls baseball team. She was asked to play on the Strathmore Men’s team as they were short a player and this is where she met her future husband Carl. They were married December 17, 1940 and farmsteaded the area that is now Brentwood, Maplewood, Strathaven, Green Meadows, Cambridge Glen, Thornbriar, Crystal Ridge, the Hospital, schools and Rodeo Grounds. Margaret was a member of the United Church Choir for more than 50 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Sam Blair Chapter (62 years), and the UCW. She always loved her gardens, flowers and “manicured” lawns, dancing the night away, playing cards with “the group” and hurried games of golf, because supper was always at 5:00. She was the Matriarch and we will miss her greatly. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Strathmore United Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary (201, 222 – 58 Ave SW, Calgary, AB, T2H 2S3) or to the Strathmore Extended Care Unit (200 Brent Blvd, Strathmore, AB, T1P 1J9).
