Obituary of Caroline Elizabeth STUBBS

STUBBS, Caroline Elizabeth March 3, 1928 – May 12, 2017 Carol was born in Delburne, Alberta on March 3, 1928 to her parents Frank and Annie Tyess. She was the youngest in her family and was close to her sisters Anne, Peggy, Kay, and brothers Steve, Martin, Frank, Joe and Harry. She grew up on her parent’s farm east of Delburne and, until going to Delburne to complete her high school education, she attended grades one through eight at the nearby one room Wood Lake School often riding her horse to school. Friends and relatives will know that while she was rarely the tallest person in a room, she told us that she played centre on her high school basketball team in battles against the Elnora school. After high school Carol headed to Calgary’s Holy Cross hospital where she graduated as a registered nurse in February 1950. While in training she resided in the students’ residence where she was fortunate to meet many new lifelong friends and later regularly attended the class reunions. She initially nursed in Red Deer and Stettler before finding full time work in Hanna at the General Hospital and where she also met her husband and our father Robert William (Bill) Stubbs. The two were married on June 30, 1953. Our parents then soon started their family with daughter Patricia arriving in 1954, son Bill in 1956 and son Barry in 1962. Carol spent the majority of her life working full time at the hospital and raising her family. She always attended her children’s sporting, educational and cultural events, volunteered for hospital fund raising events, assisted with Canadian Legion events and as well belonged to the Royal Purple organization. Carol worked as a hospital nurse for the majority of her career at the Hanna hospital and in her last years worked as a community health nurse – this she enjoyed immensely. Upon retirement in her early 60’s she and her husband Bill regularly travelled to the warmer climates of Arizona and Nevada for the winter. Summers were spent visiting family and both her and Bill loved to garden. After Bill’s death in April of 1998 she began travelling extensively to all parts of world including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska and Canada’s east and west coasts. During this time she also discovered the joys of cruise ship sailing. She especially enjoyed having new experiences and meeting new people. As she began to slow down she continued her hobbies of gardening, growing flowers, knitting, reading, sharing a good game of Skip-Bo and spending time at her son Barry’s cottage at Angevine Lake in Nova Scotia and visiting her son Bill’s house in Victoria. When her vision began to fail she moved to Parkview Manor in Hanna for a few years where she enjoyed playing cards every day with the other residents. As her vision worsened and she required a little more care she moved to Strathmore to be close to her daughter Pat and her family. Carol resided at the Sagewood Manor in Strathmore for the last five and a half years of her life and received much love and care, and most weeks, daily visits from Patricia and husband Owen, and their son Kevin and his wife Angie and her great grandchildren Tessa and Tyson. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1998 and her daughter Patricia Lynn Boyd in 2016 as well as her sisters Anne and Peggy and brothers Steve, Martin, Frank, Joe and Harry. She is survived by her sister Katherine (Kay), sons Bill (wife Heather and stepdaughter Meagan), Barry (Karla and her daughter Sarah), Patricia’s husband Owen Boyd as well as grandsons Kevin (Angie and great grandchildren Tessa and Tyson) and Kelly. She also has a large extended family of nieces and nephews and their families mourning her death. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at the St. Anne of the Prairies Catholic Church, Trochu, Alberta at 11:00 AM followed by a graveside internment at the Delburne cemetery. Following these services we will rendezvous at the Delburne Legion from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM to remember her life.
