Obituary of Harvey John Stanley DOUGAN

DOUGAN, Harvey Harvey Dougan took his final journey home on December 2, 2011 after a battle with lung and brain cancer. Harvey was born May 12, 1941 at Nightingale, Alberta and lived there until attending the University of Calgary to obtain his Bachelor of Education degree. He taught for 31 years, the first 3 in Standard and then 28 years at Hussar. He always said he was in Hussar so long because they couldn’t find the tar and feathers at the same time. He lived in Hussar until 1975 when he and his wife Helen moved to Strathmore, where he resided until his passing. After retiring from teaching, Harvey worked for Strathmore Building Supplies for 10 years installing shelving. He and Helen attended Langdon Baptist Church for 42 years before transferring to Strathmore Alliance Church. Harvey taught the adult Sunday School class for over 30 years, and served both churches as Elder and in many other capacities. Harvey was always artistic. Besides painting and jewelry making, he created a variety of metal sculptures using car and truck hoods as his medium. Many pieces were given to family and friends as well as donated to charitable organizations in and around Strathmore. His other passion was traveling. Harvey and Helen traveled to Israel, Egypt, Australia, Russia, and Eastern Europe, as well as numerous locations in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Harvey is survived by his wife Helen of 46 years; brothers Bryce (Carlene) and Ron (Cindy); sister-in-law Irene; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who loved him as he loved them. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Strathmore Alliance Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Center (1331 – 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2).
