Obituary of Mel Kersch
KERSCH, EMMANUEL (MEL) LLOYD
In the early morning hours of December 25, 2018, Mel headed out on that Last Great Trail Ride, going home to be with Dorothy, his wife of 66 years.
Mel was born on a small homestead near Schuler, Alberta August 30, 1928, living the cowboy way from the time his feet hit the ground. Always at home in those wide open spaces, his love and wonder of Nature only grew stronger through the years.
Mel, much-loved father, grandfather and friend, is remembered with laughter and tears by daughter Maxine (Hugh), son Lee (Karen) and their families, extended family and friends.
Through the years we have heard Mel described as jack-of-all-trades, crafter of tall tales, disturber of peace and complacency, ‘ornery cuss, great debater, generous and true friend, crusty old cowboy and much more. His gruff exterior served as a disguise for a man with a big heart and generous spirit.
Mel was a storyteller extraordinaire, spinning tall tales and singing or reciting poetry at the drop of a hat, weaving wisdom and humour into every exchange.
Dad worked hard but he was always there for us, he was protector and provider. He walked his talk, teaching us how to live by his example, learning the value of hard work, good judgment, courage and integrity. Family and friends were precious treasures. Sharing time with them around the kitchen table or out in nature, dishing out wisdom, humour and appreciation for the simple things in life, created a legacy of cherished memories for Dad and those fortunate enough to spend time with him. How blessed we are to have this amazing man in our lives.
Mel’s wishes were to be cremated and that no formal services be held.
Words cannot adequately express our appreciation to those amazing people at Sagewood for their love, special care and support. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr Gooden, who cared for Dad with such gentleness and compassion.
In lieu of donations, we know that Mel would ask that each of you savours the preciousness of your lives and loved ones every day, for time is fleeting.
And think of him as living
In the hearts of those he touched…
For nothing loved is ever lost
And he was loved so much
